Asset Allocation Strategy
- Our investment committee of 6 meets regularly (quarterly in calmer times, as often as necessary in volatile markets) and looks at the big picture, high-level areas that move markets:
- Momentum, for near-term market-moving trends.
- Macroeconomic factors, to help us understand what areas of the market – and what countries – may be looking “cheap” relative to their long-term averages.
- Company fundamentals, to help drive our long-term view of specific companies, industries, and markets.
- This is all distilled down to the following simple questions:
- What are our top concerns looking down the road, and how might we mitigate them?
- Where do we see opportunities, and how might we look to take advantage of those them?
Investment Strategy
- With the above information in hand, we then look at investment options that fit our outlook.
- We look at dozens of criteria to determine the investments that will make it into our model portfolios.
- One of our top criteria is what’s known as “downside capture”.
- How much downside an investment has experienced in the past relative to its peers and to a benchmark that’s most closely related to the investment?
- We believe that limiting downside in volatile markets is more important than worrying about trying to pick the top-performing investment in any category (chasing past performance).
Risk Evaluation
- Thoughtfully managing risk in a portfolio leads to better outcomes for our clients.
- We use sophisticated software that assigns “risk numbers" to each investment in a portfolio, which provides:
- A clear understanding of which investments are contributing the most risk to a portfolio, and
- The ability to model changes to our portfolios and observe the effect on overall risk in real-time
- Matching a portfolio to a client’s risk tolerance, while also looking at the risk/reward characteristics of that portfolio in the current and expected market environment, helps investors stay focused on what matters, their lifetime financial planning goals.
Assessment of the Impact of Taxes
- We actively manage our clients’ portfolios and take advantage of tax-loss harvesting opportunities to minimize capital gains taxes.
- We provide our clients with strategies to potentially reduce taxable income both now and during retirement.
